Sound Speed and Void Fraction Profiles in the Sea Surface Bubble Layer

چکیده
Observational evidence indicates that the bubble layer beneath the sea surface may show either an exponential or an inverse-square sound speed profile down to depths greater than 10 m. An exponential profile is consistent with a model of gas transport in which the downwardflux is due to turbulent diffusion and the d@usion coeficient is independent of depth. In this paper, a theoretical model is developed for the inverse-square sound speed (or voidfraction) profile, which is also based on turbulent transport but in the presence of a constant stress layer immediately beneath the surface. In such a boundary layer, the diffusion coeficient increases linearly with depth. The new solution, which is based on a Hankel transformation of the diffusion equation, includes the input gas flux explicitly. Expressions are given relating the input gas flux and the transport parameters of the bubble layer to the parameters of the inverse-square profile. By comparing this solution with published experimental data, the wind-speed dependencies of the inverse-square profile parameters, the input gas flux and the coupling coeficient between wind energy and bubble formation are estimated. Future modelling ej9brts that will be required to establish the link between the hydrodynamic properties of the bubble layer and the ambient noise in the ocean are discussed.

The impact of wind-generated bubble layer on matched field sound source localization in shallow water (Research Article)
This paper investigates the effect of the wind-generated bubble layer on the underwater sound source localization in the Persian Gulf shallow-water environment through computer simulation and the matched field processing technique. An underwater sound source of 2-10 kHz located at depths of 10, 45, and 75 m was considered at a distance of 4 km from a linear vertical receiver array. The estimati...

In this paper, a modified two-fluid model has been adopted to simulate the process of upward vertical subcooled flow boiling of refrigerant R-113 in a vertical annular channel at low pressure. The modified model considers temperature dependent properties and saturation temperature variation and was validated against a number of published low-pressure subcooled boiling experiments. The results s...

Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...

The low-frequency sound speed in a fluid-like kaolinite sediment containing air bubbles was measured using an acoustic resonator technique and found to be 114 ms with negligible dispersion between 100 and 400 Hz. The sediment's void fraction and bubble size distribution was determined from volumetric images obtained from x-ray computed tomography scans. A simplified version of Wood's effective ...
